Most modern diesel cars have a diesel particulate filter which is designed to remove toxic diesel particulates or soot from exhaust gas which stops them from harming the environment. This filter needs to be kept clean and most are designed to clean themselves but if it isn’t then it’s more likely that you will have to get it cleaned or you won’t pass your MOT and avoid engine damage.
